Sensory Friendly Experiences at ImaginOn

Libraries can be challenging for children with sensory needs and their caregivers. The noise and energy of a public space can sometimes be too much, particularly for those on the autism spectrum. We at ImaginOn hear you, and are offering our patrons the supports listed below!

Please check out our partners in the building, Children's Theatre of Charlotte. They offer a sensory friendly show for most of their Mainstage productions.

Social Story at ImaginOn

A social story uses simple language and pictures to help children on the autism spectrum or with other sensory sensitivities understand and navigate different social situations or new experiences. It provides clear and structured explanations of specific events, like visiting the Library. Click here to see ImaginOn's social story.

Hours at ImaginOn BEGINNING NOVEMBER 2024

The sensory friendly hour is on Mondays from 9 to 10 AM. Our friendly staff will help children and families with navigating the spaces, locating materials, and generally encouraging visitors to become more comfortable using the Library. In addition, we will:

  • Soften the lighting in our spaces when possible.

  • Provide quiet spaces as well as noise-cancelling headphones for patrons to borrow in our public spaces.

  • Provide fidgets and other sensory objects for patrons to borrow to support engagement while using the Library.

Storytime at ImaginOn

Join us for this Storytime specifically designed for children on the autism spectrum or with other sensory needs. Children up to age 11 are welcome to attend. Registration is not required, but to ensure an optimal experience, we will limit the number of attendees to 40.
